Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes as a day trip: tickets and buses

Plitvice Lakes National Park works as a day trip from Zagreb by public bus, as long as you plan two things: a seat on an early bus and a park ticket for the right entrance and hour. This guide covers both, plus the park's own route options and when a guided tour makes more sense. Every price and time below is dated and linked to the park, the Zagreb Bus Station or the operator page it came from.
For the rest of your stay, see our Zagreb city guide and the Croatia country guide.
The plan in one paragraph
Take a morning bus from Zagreb Bus Station, get off at the park entrance your ticket is for, walk one of the park's numbered routes, and catch a late-afternoon bus back. On a weekday in mid-October 2026, that means leaving Zagreb at 6:45 or 8:00 and returning at 16:15 or 17:15, which leaves roughly 6 to 8 hours between arriving and leaving (Zagreb Bus Station timetable, as of 9 October 2026). The bus suits anyone happy to read a timetable and walk. A guided tour suits people who want transport, ticket and guide handled in one booking, or who are short on time to plan. Croatia uses the euro, so ignore any kuna (HRK) prices you find on older pages: the euro replaced the kuna on 1 January 2023 (Croatian National Bank).
Park tickets: seasons, prices, timed entry
The park sets day-ticket prices by season. These are the 2026 prices in euro (as of October 2026, Plitvice Lakes National Park price list):
| Period (2026) | Adults | Students | Children 7-18 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan-31 Mar and 1 Nov-31 Dec | EUR 10 | EUR 6 | EUR 4 |
| 1 Apr-31 May and 1-31 Oct | EUR 23 | EUR 14 | EUR 6 |
| 1 Jun-30 Sep, Price A | EUR 40 | EUR 25 | EUR 15 |
| 1 Jun-30 Sep, Price B | EUR 25 | EUR 15 | EUR 9 |
In summer the cheaper Price B applies to later entry: after 16:00 from 1 June to 31 August, and after 15:00 in September. Children under 7 enter free, as do people with movement difficulties and a disability over 50% and the person accompanying them. Two-day tickets cost EUR 39 for adults in October and EUR 60 from June to September, and need the visitor's name on the ticket (all as of October 2026, price list).
What the ticket includes. The electric boat and the panoramic train inside the park, visitor insurance, and use of the lake trails and hiking trails (as of October 2026, price list). You do not pay extra for the boat or train.
How timed entry works. When you buy online, you choose a date, an entry timeslot and an entrance (park visitor tips, as of October 2026). The park's rules, from its FAQ (as of October 2026):
- Keep the ticket on your phone or print it.
- Validate it at the entrance you picked, within the time on the ticket.
- You cannot enter before your slot, and you "may be late an hour at the most".
Do you have to buy online? No. The park "highly" recommends its official webshop, and says tickets can be bought at the entrance "if tickets are still available", by cash or card (FAQ, as of October 2026). For a day trip by bus, buy online.
Where to buy. Use the park's own ticket shop. We checked Tiqets on 9 October 2026 and it did not sell a standalone park ticket, so the official shop is the place to go. We could not load the shop's terms of sale (the page did not open for us), so we cannot tell you its refund rules or how far ahead it sells. Read them before you pay.
Pick your bus before your slot. On the October dates we checked, the useful morning buses arrive at 9:00 and 10:22 (see the next section). Book the slot that starts when your bus arrives: you cannot enter early, but you have up to an hour's grace.
Buses from Zagreb
All buses leave from Zagreb Bus Station (Autobusni kolodvor Zagreb), Avenija Marina Držića 4. The park itself points visitors to the station's timetable (park: how to get here). Three operators sell this route at the station: Autopromet Slunj, Prijevoz Knežević and FlixBus.
Zagreb to Plitvice, Wednesday 14 October 2026 (one-way fares shown in the Zagreb Bus Station timetable, checked 9 October 2026):
| Departs Zagreb | Arrives Plitvice | Operator | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5:45 | 8:15 | Autopromet Slunj | EUR 15.60 |
| 6:45 | 9:00 | Knežević / FlixBus | EUR 11.81 / EUR 16.99 |
| 8:00 | 10:22 | Knežević / FlixBus | EUR 14.00 / EUR 16.99 |
| 10:30 | 13:07 | Autopromet Slunj | EUR 15.60 |
| 14:15 | 16:45 | Autopromet Slunj | EUR 15.60 |
| 14:30 | 16:20 | FlixBus | EUR 18.99 |
Plitvice to Zagreb, same day:
| Departs Plitvice | Arrives Zagreb | Operator | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6:52 | 9:30 | Autopromet Slunj | EUR 15.60 |
| 9:45 | 12:00 | Knežević / FlixBus | EUR 14.00 / EUR 16.99 |
| 14:45 | 17:05 | Autopromet Slunj | EUR 15.60 |
| 16:15 | 18:37 | Knežević / FlixBus | EUR 14.00 / EUR 16.99 |
| 17:15 | 19:05 | FlixBus | EUR 15.49 |
| 17:16 | 19:50 | Autopromet Slunj | EUR 15.60 |
What to know about these times:
- Journey time is 1 h 50 min to 2 h 37 min, depending on the bus.
- Same times, two operators. Knežević and FlixBus list identical times; we could not confirm whether it is one coach. Compare fares.
- FlixBus fares change by date. The same 14:30 bus showed EUR 18.99 on 14 October and EUR 14.49 on 17 October 2026.
- Weekends and November are thinner. On Saturday 17 October 2026 there was no 5:45 departure and no 14:45 return. On Wednesday 4 November 2026 there was no 8:00 departure and no 16:15 return. For a November trip, the last return that day was the 17:15 FlixBus or the 17:16 Autopromet.
- Buying. The station sells tickets online until 15 minutes before departure, and through the Obeo app (Zagreb Bus Station, as of 9 October 2026).
Timetables change with the season. Check your exact date on the station timetable before you buy a park slot.
Where to get off. The station timetable lists a single stop, "Plitvička Jezera NP". The park says there are bus stops near both Entrance 1 and Entrance 2, on both sides of the road: one for buses towards Zadar, one towards Zagreb (park FAQ, as of October 2026). The two entrances are about 3 km apart (how to get here). Tell the driver which entrance your ticket is for. For the return, wait on the side of the road for buses towards Zagreb.
Luggage. The park stores bags free of charge at Entrance 1, Entrance 2 and the Flora auxiliary entrance (FAQ), so you can come with a backpack.
Which entrance and which route
The park numbers its walking programmes by letter. Entrance 1 (north) starts programmes A, B, C and K1. Entrance 2 (south) starts E, F, H and K2 (lake tour programmes, as of October 2026):
| Programme | Entrance | Time | Length | Boat or train |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | 2-3 h | 3.5 km | No, walking only |
| B | 1 | 3-4 h | 4 km | Boat and panoramic train |
| C | 1 | 4-5 h | 8 km | Boat and panoramic train |
| E | 2 | 2-3 h | 5.1 km | Boat and panoramic train |
| F | 2 | 3-4 h | 4.6 km | Boat and panoramic train |
| H | 2 | 4-6 h | 8.9 km | Boat and panoramic train |
| K1 | 1 | 6-8 h | 16.5 km | Boat |
| K2 | 2 | 6-8 h | 17.5 km | Boat |
For a bus day trip, programmes C and H fit best. They take 4 to 6 hours and cover both the upper and lower lakes with the boat and train doing part of the distance. With a 9:00 arrival and a 16:15 or 17:15 bus back, you have time for either plus a break. The K routes (6 to 8 hours) are tight on a day trip and leave little margin for the bus.
Choosing an entrance. Pick the route first, then book your ticket for the entrance it starts from: the ticket is only valid there.
Boat and train hours in October 2026. The long boat route (P2 to P3) runs 8:00 to 16:30 every 30 minutes. The panoramic trains run from about 7:30 to 18:00, every 30 minutes depending on the section. The park entrances are open 7:00 to 18:00, and ticket sales close at 15:00 (as of October 2026, Autumn at Plitvice Lakes and working hours).
Guided tours from Zagreb
A tour bundles the bus, the park ticket and a guide into one booking. It makes sense if you do not want to book a park slot and two bus seats yourself, or want a guide. It costs more: in October 2026, the bus fares and an adult park ticket above add up to about EUR 49 to EUR 57 per adult, depending on the operator.
As an example of what tours include, the only Plitvice product we found on Tiqets' Plitvice Lakes page (opens Tiqets in a new tab) on 9 October 2026 was a "Plitvice Lakes: Day Tour from Zagreb". It listed a price from USD 106.65, 10 h 30 min, an 8:30 start at Zrinjevac Park in central Zagreb, a group of up to 8, an English-speaking guide, park entry and a stop in Rastoke. Food and drinks were not included. Free cancellation was offered up to 24 hours before. On the day we checked, it was marked "temporarily unavailable", so check whether it can be booked for your date.
If you are comfortable with the bus, you do not need a tour.
Timing: months, crowds and winter
Cheapest months. Tickets cost the least from November to March (EUR 10 for adults) and the most from June to September (EUR 40 before the afternoon cut-off) (2026 prices, price list). October, April and May sit in between at EUR 23.
Crowds by hour. The park does not publish visitor numbers by hour. A 2018 park article warned that between 10:00 and 14:00 in summer "occasional closure of the park is possible" because of crowds (park, 13 August 2018). That advice is old, so treat it as a hint: the earliest bus gets you in before the midday peak.
Winter. The park stays open, but with shorter hours. In winter "the Lower Lakes are usually open to the public, while the Upper Lakes are closed" (FAQ). Last winter (1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026), ticket sales ran 8:00 to 13:00, at Entrance 1 and the Flora auxiliary entrance (Winter at Plitvice Lakes, published 19 December 2025). The park had not published hours for winter 2026-27 when we checked on 9 October 2026.
Before you go. On 9 October 2026 the park listed the Upper and Lower Lakes as open and the boats and trains as running to schedule (current conditions). Check that page on the morning of your trip, or call the park on +385 53 751 015.
Staying overnight near the park instead
A night near the park removes the bus pressure. You can arrive the afternoon before, enter when the gates open (7:00 in October 2026), and walk a long K route without watching the clock.
The park runs its own accommodation. Its hotels and campsites page listed Hotel Jezero and the Korana and Borje campsites on 9 October 2026. Guests at the park's hotels buy a park ticket for the first day only; admission is free for each further day of the stay (FAQ).
For October 2026, Hotel Jezero offers an "Autumn charms at Plitvice Lakes" package, valid 1 to 31 October 2026 (special offers). It costs from EUR 94 per person for 1 night with breakfast and a park ticket valid for the whole stay (as of October 2026, Autumn at Plitvice Lakes). Check what the price includes before you book.
For private rooms and guesthouses in the villages around the park, compare places to stay near Plitvice Lakes (opens Booking.com in a new tab). Check the distance to the entrance on your ticket before you book: the two entrances are about 3 km apart.
