Czech Republic eSIM in 2026: plans, local SIMs and the koruna
Do you need an eSIM for Prague? Dated plan prices from Airalo and the three Czech networks, who EU roaming covers, what we could and could not confirm about ID, and why you should pay in koruna, not euro.

Staying connected in the Czech Republic is simple, but the best option depends on where your SIM comes from. This guide compares an eSIM bought before you fly with a Czech prepaid SIM, and covers what eSIM sellers skip: Czechia uses the koruna, not the euro. Every price is dated and sourced.

Do you need an eSIM in the Czech Republic?
If your SIM is from an EU or EEA country, probably not. The Czech Republic is in the EU, so "Roam like at home" applies: calls, texts and data cost the same as at home. The zone covers the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 also Ukraine and Moldova (European Commission, checked 16 October 2026). The current regulation is valid until 2032 (EUR-Lex summary).
Two catches: your operator may set a fair-use limit on roaming data if your plan is unlimited or very cheap per GB, and if you roam more than you use your SIM at home over 4 months, it may add a surcharge (European Commission). Our Bulgaria eSIM guide explains EU roaming in more detail.
If your SIM is from outside the zone (UK, US, Canada, Australia and others), plan ahead. EU rules do not cap what your home carrier charges in Prague. The UK has been outside "Roam like at home" since it left the EU, although some UK operators kept similar benefits (European Commission). A data eSIM or a local prepaid SIM is usually the practical choice.
Networks and coverage
The Czech Republic has three mobile networks, and each publishes an interactive coverage map: O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
We could not extract written claims from these maps, so we do not rank the networks. Before a long train ride or a hiking day in the Bohemian hills, look up that exact area on the map of the network your SIM uses. Valleys and rail cuttings are where signal usually drops, so download offline maps and tickets first.
Airalo's Czech eSIM lists two networks: O2 (5G) and Vodafone (LTE). Its plan text also calls it an "LTE Data-only eSIM", so do not count on 5G (Airalo plan page, as of 16 October 2026). A local SIM uses its own operator's network.
eSIM vs a local prepaid SIM
ID rules. We found no page from the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) and no section of Czech law that requires ID to buy a prepaid SIM. The O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone prepaid pages we checked show no ID step. Shops may still ask, so carry your passport.
Buying online is the hard part. Vodafone's English page says "Ordering a new tariff online is unfortunately not possible for non CZ citizens" and that it accepts only cards issued in the Czech Republic or the EU (Vodafone). Its eSIM vouchers are sent by Czech Post (Vodafone, in Czech). In practice, a local SIM means a shop visit after you arrive.
Local prices as of 16 October 2026, in Czech koruna (CZK). USD figures are our conversion at the Czech National Bank rate for 16 October 2026 (USD 1 = CZK 21.622) and are approximate.
| Option | What you get | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vodafone Tourist SIM | One week of unlimited data, CZK 100 extra credit | CZK 349 (about USD 16.14) | Calls CZK 4.50/min, SMS CZK 1.90 |
| Vodafone Předplacenka 15 GB | 15 GB, first month included | CZK 249 (about USD 11.52), includes CZK 100 credit | Czech-language page |
| O2 GO 10 GB | 10 GB + 100 minutes, 30 days | CZK 299 per 30 days (about USD 13.83) | Page does not say if the SIM costs extra |
| O2 GO na den | Unlimited calls in Czechia + 1 GB per day, charged only on days you use it | CZK 99 card (CZK 100 credit), then CZK 29 per day used | For light use |
| T-Mobile Twist unlimited week | Unlimited data in Czechia for 7 days (EU limit 13 GB) | CZK 249 add-on | Needs a Twist card (CZK 0 to 200) |
Promotions change often, so check the price on the day you buy.
Price per GB. Vodafone's 15 GB card works out at about USD 0.77 per GB; Airalo's fixed plans below run from USD 0.72 to USD 4.00. A local unlimited week (about USD 11.50 to 16.10) costs well under Airalo's (USD 26.50). If you have time for a shop visit, a local SIM gives more data for the money.
Where to buy. Vodafone sells prepaid SIMs in its stores and at selected partners (Vodafone, in Czech). We could not confirm on prg.aero which operators have counters at Prague Airport, or their hours, so check the airport's shop list or the operators' store locators first.
Airalo plans for the Czech Republic
Airalo sells a local Czech eSIM. It is data-only, covers the Czech Republic only, and lists the O2 and Vodafone networks. Prices below are as shown on Airalo's Czech Republic plans (opens Airalo in a new tab) on 16 October 2026. The page showed USD; your currency may differ.
| Data | Validity | Price (USD) | Per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 3 days | 4.00 | 4.00 |
| 3 GB | 3 days | 4.50 | 1.50 |
| 3 GB | 7 days | 5.00 | 1.67 |
| 5 GB | 7 days | 7.00 | 1.40 |
| 10 GB | 7 days | 14.00 | 1.40 |
| 5 GB | 15 days | 7.50 | 1.50 |
| 10 GB | 15 days | 14.50 | 1.45 |
| 20 GB | 15 days | 23.00 | 1.15 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | 8.00 | 1.60 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | 15.00 | 1.50 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | 24.00 | 1.20 |
| 50 GB | 30 days | 36.00 | 0.72 |
Airalo also lists "Unlimited" plans: 3 days USD 11.50, 5 days USD 18.50, 7 days USD 26.50, 10 days USD 34.00, 15 days USD 48.00 and 30 days USD 69.00. Speed drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB of use per day.
What the numbers say:
- For a week in Prague, 10 GB for 30 days costs USD 15.00, only USD 1.00 more than 10 GB for 7 days. The 30-day plan is the safer buy if your dates might change.
- The 7-day unlimited plan (USD 26.50) costs almost twice the 7-day 10 GB plan (USD 14.00). It only pays off if you will use well over 10 GB in a week.
- Hotspot: the Czech plan details do not mention tethering. Airalo's help centre says hotspot works "as long as it is supported by your device and the network" (Airalo Help Center, "Can I use tethering (Personal Hotspot)?"). If you rely on it, check before you buy.
- Top-ups: Airalo says the eSIM is "rechargeable online with no expiry".
Setting it up
Before you fly
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier.
- Buy and install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. For Airalo's Czech plan, validity starts when the eSIM connects to a network in the Czech Republic, not when you install it (Airalo's Czech Republic plans (opens Airalo in a new tab)).
- Save the QR code or installation details offline in case you need to reinstall.
At Prague Airport
- Switch mobile data to the Czech eSIM line.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Airalo lists this as required on iOS and Android.
- If something does not work, use the free "Prague Airport WiFi Free" network (Prague Airport).
- Buying a local SIM instead? Carry your passport and ask what the price includes.
What to turn off
- Data roaming on your home SIM, unless you are on an EU/EEA plan that includes it.
- Automatic data switching between lines (iPhone: "Allow Cellular Data Switching"; many Android phones have a similar setting). It can quietly use your home SIM when the eSIM signal is weak.
Getting from the airport into the city is covered in our Prague guide.
Money: koruna, not euro
The Czech Republic is in the EU but does not use the euro. By law its currency is the Czech koruna, shown as "Kč" on price tags and CZK in exchange rates (Act on the Czech National Bank, Article 13). On 16 October 2026 the Czech National Bank rate was EUR 1 = CZK 24.325 (CNB).
"Pay in CZK or in your currency?" Card terminals and cash machines may offer to charge you in your home currency. The EU's Your Europe site says the extra fees "often make this option more expensive", that the provider must show the cost as a mark-up over the European Central Bank rate, and that "you always have the right to say no and make the payment in the local currency" (Your Europe, last checked 27 January 2026). Choose CZK. Because the koruna is not the euro, your card provider may still charge a conversion fee, even on an EU card.
Cards. We found no official statement on how widely cards are accepted in Czechia, so we make no claim either way.
Quick answers
Can I make calls or send SMS? Not with Airalo's Czech plan, which is data-only. Use internet calling apps, or keep your home SIM active for texts. The local prepaid cards above include calls and SMS at the rates listed.
Will I keep WhatsApp? Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to the number you registered it with, not to the line carrying your data. Keep your home SIM in as a second line for verification codes.
How do I top up? Airalo tops up in its app. Local SIMs top up in operator shops, at ATMs, at the Czech Post and at some newsagents, as each operator lists. Vodafone's app needs an App Store or Google Play account set to the Czech Republic (Vodafone), so a shop top-up may be easier.
Going on to Vienna or Budapest? Airalo's Czech plan does not work there, so buy a separate plan for each country. A Czech prepaid SIM roams in Austria and Hungary under EU rules, within the operator's EU data limit; T-Mobile lists 13 GB of EU data on its unlimited week (T-Mobile). Next stop Hungary? See our Budapest guide.
